In Loving Memory

Leslie Smith

It is with profound sadness that the family of Les Smith announces his peaceful passing at home, surrounded by the love of his family on May 15, 2026, at the age of 87. The loss of Les has left a heartbreak that words cannot fully express, and he will be deeply missed every single day by all who knew and loved him.

Les was the devoted husband of Leona Smith and a proud and loving father to Elizabeth van Noort (Ben), Tracy Smith (Bob), Leslie Smith (Anna), and Tanya Tarlit (Steve). He was a cherished grandfather to Josh Smith, Lex van Noort, Bjorn van Noort, Halen Tarlit, and Alexa Tarlit, each of whom brought immense pride and joy to his life.

He is survived by his loving sister, Marlena Franklin, and reunited in peace with his brothers Teddy and Terry along with his grandson Bjorn.

Les found happiness in life’s simple and meaningful moments. He loved golfing, fishing, spending treasured time at the family cabin at Crystal Lake, learning about finances, exploring new places, and most importantly, being with his family. Whether chatting with neighbours, watching the wildlife that frequented his backyard, or sharing stories and laughter with loved ones, Les had a way of making people feel welcomed and valued.

For more than 30 years, Les worked for Overwaitea/Save-On-Foods, where he built many lifelong friendships. He often spoke of the company as his home away from home and valued the relationships he made throughout his career.

Outwardly a no-nonsense man, he harboured a naughty sense of humour. He was loving, good, kind, generous and tolerant of others. Les will be remembered for his strength, and unwavering love for his family. His presence was a gift, and his absence leaves an immeasurable void in the hearts of those who loved him. His loss will be grieved and his life celebrated.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in Les’s memory to the Terry Fox Foundation, the Diabetes Canada, or the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation.
