In Loving Memory
Elfrieda Berndt

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Elfrieda Berndt on May 24, 2026, in Enderby, BC.
Elfrieda was born in Bessarabia on July 19, 1934, to parents Adolf and Emilie Dietterle. She grew up during the hardships of the Depression and wartime years alongside her three brothers and three sisters. In her late teens, Elfrieda immigrated to Canada with her family, eventually settling in Enderby.
Elfrieda married the love of her life, Johann Berndt, and together they built a life centered on family, hard work, and community. In the 1970s and 1980s, Elfrieda and her husband owned and operated a confectionary business. She found joy in life’s simple pleasures — bus trips to Reno, evenings playing cards, visits to the casino, and dancing to old-time music, especially polka, her favourite.
Elfrieda had a creative and caring spirit. She loved gardening, knitting, crocheting, card games, and watching game shows. She also enjoyed listening to country and German music and was known for her easygoing personality, quick wit, and wonderful sense of humour.
She was predeceased by her husband, Johann.
She will be deeply missed by her children; Edgar, Rose (Tom), Rudi, Roland (Mitzi), and David, grandchildren; Christine, Dawn, Jason, Justine, Caitlin, and Bailey, as well as extended family, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
A life well lived is a precious gift
Of hope and strength and grace,
From someone who has made our world
A brighter, better place
It’s filled with moments, sweet and sad
With smiles and sometimes tears,
With friendships formed and good times shared
And laughter through the years.
A life well lived is a legacy
Of joy and pride and pleasure,
A living, lasting memory
Our grateful hearts will treasure

We are so sorry for your loss Rose and family. Your mom was so special and funny and I had the privilege of helping carie for her in her last years at Parkview. I asked her once if she remembered me from when we hung out in our teen years. She looked at me and said “Yes I remember you. You guys were smoking!” And she wagged her finger at me. She was soo funny. She will be missed.
My sympathies to her family. She was such a hard worker & literally brought sunshine all around her. Bless Mrs Berndt .

She was such a sweet lady with such a wonderful sense of humor. 🙏❤️
We enjoyed her smile each time we played and sang Christian music at Parkview. Thanks for sharing.
I had the pleasure of visiting Mrs Berndt recently when my Mom moved to Parkveiw. She still had her wonderful sense of humor. She was an old friend of my Moms and they were very happy to see each other again.
Many fond memories come to mind of Berndt’s confectionery and the magic it held for us as kids. Spending our allowance on penny candy and Mrs Berndt was always humorous and welcoming.
She will forever hold a special place in the hearts of all if us who grew up in Enderby.
Our deepest condolences to her family
Rest easy
