Daniel Francis Sieben

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Daniel Francis Sieben on July 17, 2026, in Vernon, British Columbia, after a brief battle with cancer. Dan was born on April 8, 1947, in Macklin, Saskatchewan.

Dan was predeceased by his parents, Joe and Anna Sieben, and by his siblings (Joe, Anne, Jimmy, Jenette and his other brother Jimmy)

He leaves behind his two sons, Cody (Tammi) and Mitchell (Jen), who will forever cherish the love, guidance, and countless memories they shared with their father. He was a proud grandfather to Madison (Mikayla), Tate, Xander (Kim), Elliott, and Fiona, and a loving great-grandfather to Caden, Myah, and Hayden. His family brought him tremendous pride throughout his life.

Dan dedicated more than 25 years of service to the City of Calgary as an Assessor before retiring. Retirement opened the door to the life he had always wanted to live. He settled in Vernon, British Columbia, where he enjoyed the sunshine and built a wonderful community of friends. His adventurous spirit took him to Mexico, Thailand, and Vietnam, where he spent many winters exploring the world with his best friend, whom he met 17+ years earlier through Alcoholics Anonymous. Their friendship, forged through recovery, became one of the great joys of his retirement.

Dan was immensely proud of his 26 years of sobriety, a testament to his determination, strength, and resilience. Recovery gave him not only a second chance at life but also lifelong friendships that enriched his retirement and remained deeply important to him.

When he wasn’t travelling, Dan could usually be found meeting friends for coffee or gathering with neighbours almost every day to solve the world’s problems—or, more often than not, to talk about absolutely nothing. Those simple conversations and shared laughs were some of his greatest pleasures.

Anyone who knew Dan knew he loved telling stories. In fact, he loved them so much that his family and friends often knew the ending long before he got there—usually because they’d heard it many times before. It never mattered. The stories, the laughter, and the smile that always accompanied them were part of what made Dan who he was. Even cancer never took away his sense of humour.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and all of the healthcare professionals who cared for Dan with compassion and dignity throughout his illness. Your kindness and dedication will never be forgotten.

In keeping with Dan’s wishes, there will be no funeral service or celebration of life.

Dan will be remembered for his resilience, his love of travel, his unwavering friendships, his well-worn stories, and the laughter he brought to those around him. He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever loved.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to share a coffee with a friend, tell a story—whether they’ve heard it before or not—and remember Dan with a smile.

Dad, thank you for the lessons, the laughter, and the stories. We’ll miss hearing them more than you ever knew. We love you, and we’ll carry you with us wherever life takes us.
