In Loving Memory
(Benny) Ben Shykora

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our brother Ben on March 29, 2025 in Calgary, Alberta.
Ben, third child of Katie and Mike Shykora was born in Enderby, B.C. Ben attended Grindrod Elementary School. He graduated from Enderby High School. Ben attended Grade 13 in Salmon Arm. In 1964, Ben attended the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (S.A.I.T.). He was enrolled in the Survey Engineering Dept. In 1971, Ben graduated from the University of British Columbia (UBC) with a Civil Engineering Degree.
Growing up on a homestead in Grindrod, Ben played a significant role in the running of the family farm. He was very proud and keen to drive the tractor. In the spring, Ben drove the tractor to plough the fields before planting and in the Summer to pick up the piles of hay to be stored in the barn. This hay was to feed the animals in the Autumn and Winter. Being raised on a farm taught Ben (and his siblings) a wonderful work ethic. Growing up in an honest, humble and hard-working environment, brought Ben (and siblings) comfort, gratitude and deep respect for our parents.
Ben excelled in carpentry. As a teenager and young adult, he was often building things and inventing new projects. Another passion of Ben’s was Music. He received his first guitar from our parents in February 1960, two months prior to his 17th birthday. Ben continued singing and playing his guitar all throughout his adult life. He sang and played his guitar for the residents at Royal Park two weeks prior to his passing.
Ben moved to Calgary in 1975. He was employed as a professional Engineer. Ben had a company, Benalta Consultants Ltd for over 30 years. He was the project engineer and manager.
Ben and his young family enjoyed camping in their blue van, packed to the top with tents and other camping gear. They camped in Terrace and Prince Rupert. Renee (daughter) has a “fond” memory of “almost getting eaten by horseflies in Rupert.”
Ben made many trips to visit his daughter and her family in Florida. His most memorable trip was when his granddaughter, Olivia was born! Other wonderful trips to Florida included taking Olivia to Disney World and the Zoo.
Ben is predeceased by his parents: Katie and Mike, brothers: Paul, Dennis and Willie, sisters: Marion, Iris, Olga and Annie.
Ben is survived by his daughter Renee, son-in-law Zach and granddaughter Olivia Katarina, sisters: Natalka and Patricia, nephews: Michael, Sheldon and Tyler, niece: Pat.
Ben will be forever missed and is deeply cherished by his close friend, Evelyn.
Celebration of Life will be held at the Grindrod Cemetery on July 25, 2025.
