In Loving Memory
Muriel Cockrell
We are sad to announce the passing of Muriel Cockrell (Kelman) after many years of struggling with dementia. She passed away peacefully at Three Links Manor in Kelowna on April 4, 2023, and is now singing with the Angels.
Muriel was born in Perth, Scotland, January 13, 1947, as the second born of twin girls to Anna and Alexander Kelman. She moved to Canada with her family in 1956 at the young age of nine and grew up in Vancouver.
Muriel met her first love and future husband, Tom, on a blind date on St. Patrick’s Day in 1967. They were engaged in the fall of that year and married on April 5, 1968.
In her earlier years Muriel was a member of the Sons of Scotland and St. John’s Ambulance. She enjoyed curling and bowling in those early years. After meeting Tom, she discovered that she enjoyed the outdoors, camping, fishing, hiking and sightseeing. She was always up for a new adventure. She also enjoyed knitting, crochet, needlepoint and ceramics. She loved animals, and animals loved her.
When her sons began school, she joined Scouts Canada to become a Beaver Leader doing what she loved… working with young children. She continued for more that 20 years.
With Tom, she raised her family, Michael and Andrew, in Surrey and later, in Abbotsford. She joined Trinity Memorial United Church in Abbotsford and fulfilled her love for music by joining two church choirs. She was also an active member of the UCW.
After moving to Lake Country, she continued her involvement in Scouting and the church. Later she joined Kiwanis to continue her passion for helping children.
She is survived by her husband Tom; sons Michael and Andrew; Grandchildren Paydan, Austin, Alyssa and Allexis; Great-grand children Rebecca, Luke and Riley; Niece and Nephew Janice and Scott, as well as cousins Sheena and Fiona.
She was predeceased by her grandmother, Jessie Beveridge; Mother and Father, Anna and Alexander Kelman, as well as her Twin Sister Phyllis.
A celebration of Muriel’s life will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2023, 1:30PM, Winfield United Church, 3751 Woodsdale Rd, Lake Country, BC. Light refreshments will be served.
