In Loving Memory

Lena Dirkje Matzke (Silvius)

With deep love and sadness, we announce the passing of Lena Dirkje Matzke, who left this world peacefully on September 15, 2025, at the age of 82. Lena was born on January 29, 1943, in Klundert, Netherlands, and built a beautiful life rooted in faith, family, and hard work. She was a devoted wife to her beloved late husband, Ernst Matzke, and together they shared a rich life full of love, laughter, and purpose. Lena was the proud and loving mother of Annemarie Matzke (Stephen Wood), Janet Benesch (Tedd), James Matzke (Samantha Trenholm), and Jennifer Beaudoin (David). Her legacy continues through her 9 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her immense joy and pride. Throughout her life, Lena embraced many roles — a dedicated wife, nurturing mother, hardworking farmer, and gifted painter. Her hands were rarely still; whether tending to her garden, preparing something delicious in the kitchen, or creating beautiful memories, she infused everything she did with care and creativity. A true expert in the kitchen, Lena was known for her incredible baking and her passion for preserving food. She especially loved teaching her children how to cook, passing on traditions through the art of canning and pickling — lessons that have become treasured memories and enduring family customs. Above all, Lena was a woman of deep faith. Her devotion as a Christian guided her life and was reflected in her kindness, strength, and unwavering spirit. She touched the lives of many with her warmth, wisdom, and generosity. A celebration of Lena’s life will be held in Edmonton this October, with details to follow. Though she is no longer with us, Lena’s love, lessons, and legacy live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be dearly missed, loved and forever remembered.
