Lawrence “Laurie” West – November 17, 1927 – January 17, 2025
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Lawrence Brockington West at the age of 97 in Vernon, BC, with family by his side.
He will be lovingly remembered by his devoted wife, Helen (nee Murray), with whom he celebrated 71 years of marriage last October.
He also leaves behind 2 sons, Paul West and Ronald West, 2 daughters, Karen West and Kathy West, 7 Grandchildren, Jennifer Lee, Mitch Clingo, Zachary West, Wes Clingo, Andrew West, Spencer Clingo, and Liam Eddy, as well as 7 Great Grandchildren and many more friends and extended family in BC and Ontario.
Laurie was predeceased by his parents, Colonels Walter & Maude West, his brother Stanley and his loving daughter in law, Sharon West.
Born in England, Laurie had a thoughtful and quiet demeanour that reflected his deep care for family. He met Helen in 1952 when she visited England from Ontario, and the two quickly fell in love. Laurie emigrated to Canada the following year and the couple married in 1953.
Laurie worked as an Architectural Engineer for Westinghouse in Ontario for many years before transitioning to a career in finance. Following his retirement, he and Helen relocated to British Columbia where he found joy in Cross Country Skiing, Camping Adventures and trips abroad, including Europe, Australia, and many cruises in later years.
A talented self-taught cabinetmaker, Laurie crafted beautiful furniture that remains treasured by his family.
His connection to the Salvation Army, where his parents served as officers, brought him purpose and fulfillment. As a dedicated member of the Canadian Staff Band, he traveled extensively to perform, sharing his love of music through his horn playing.
n avid cross-country skier, Laurie was a proud member of the Sovereign Lake Nordic Club in Vernon, BC and participated in numerous Loppet races, even earning victories in some.
Laurie will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and his legacy of quiet strength, creativity, and devotion to family will live on.
Laurie’s family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at Heritage Square in Vernon, BC. The care and attention provided was truly exceptional. Your kindness extended beyond Laurie’s needs, as you also went above and beyond to ensure Helen was supported during her regular visits to see her husband. The dignity and respect you showed to both Laurie and Helen did not go unnoticed, and we are profoundly grateful for the compassion you demonstrated during such a challenging time. A very special thank you to Brian and Linda.
A celebration of Laurie’s life is being planned for the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made by Cash or Cheque only to:
