In Loving Memory
June Johnstone

It is with deep love and sadness that we announce the passing of June Johnstone, a Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, and Aunt. June was a woman who filled every room—and every pasture—with love, laughter, and purpose.
Born in Edmonton, Alberta, June displayed her lively spirit at a young age, hosting her own CBC Radio programme at just 19 years old. That early achievement spoke volumes about her confidence, her lively spirit, and her ability to connect with people – a gift she carried throughout her life. In 1955 she married her high-school sweetheart, Ed Kostyk, and together they welcomed two daughters, Linda and Cathy.
In 1978 she and Ed realized a childhood dream to see the world. They spent six months traveling – beginning in Iran and journeying through countries across Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and finishing in Hawaii – an adventure they treasured for the rest of their lives.
Her love of horses was always strong, and it only grew as the years passed. She didn’t just ride—she embraced adventure, even winning a 25-mile endurance ride at the age of 45. That accomplishment captured her determination and her boundless heart.
Life brought new chapters. In 1981 she married Bob Large, and together they created Harmony Ranch in Cawston, British Columbia. There they bred and raised magnificent Belgian Draft Horses, a dream realized until Bob’s sudden passing in 1988. Though that loss was profound, her resilience shone through.
In 1986 and 87 her joy grew with the arrival of two grandsons, Joey and Bobby, born to her daughter Cathy. Immediately they became the light of her life, where she cherished every moment spent with them.
In 1992 she found love again with Bob Johnstone her beloved husband for the past 33 years. One of their favorite simple pleasures was to pack a lunch, hop in the car, and see where the road would take them. Those spontaneous journeys, full of discovery, and so much laughter, reflected the way she approached life itself.
June was known for her warm hospitality, exceptional cooking and legendary pies and desserts. An avid gardener she always shared an abundant harvest of fruits and vegetables. Also a devoted animal lover, she was rarely without the company of horses, dogs, and a menagerie of farm animals. Whether nurturing plants, animals, or people, she gave her love and care freely and with heartfelt devotion.
Her story is one of courage, curiosity, and deep love—for her family, her friends, the land, and every creature great and small. She showed us how to live with generosity, humour, and an open heart. She will be deeply missed by her husband Bob Johnstone, daughters Linda Kostyk and Catherine (Doug) Bagnoli, Grandsons Joseph Kostyk and Robert (Amber) Kostyk, Great Grandsons Nilan, Zander, Silva, Maverick and Wolfgang, and Step-Children Dean (Sandy) Johnstone, Ally Johnstone, and Brent (Norrie) Johnstone.
Her love and laughter, adventurous spirit, and love of animals will live on in all who knew her.
