In Loving Memory

Jean Ferguson

With heavy hearts, the family of Jean Ferguson, nee Barnes, confirms she died peacefully at Vernon B.C. on February 7, 2025. She, with her husband Glen, who pre deceased her, had lived in Vernon for over 50 years.

Jean was born the fifth of six children to Charles (John) and Katherine Barnes of Elnora, Alberta. Her three sisters and two brothers pre deceased her.

She leaves her beloved nieces and nephews and their spouses, Norah Ferguson, her sister-in-law and many good friends who supported her. Jean taught school for several years in Alberta, in Portland, Oregon and for many years, here in Vernon. Both Jean and Glen enjoyed skiing on Silver Star, as well as camping and fishing at mountain lakes. She was heard to say she played second fiddle in Glen’s life – his first love was fishing! They enjoyed travelling to warmer places in winter and spent their summers happily at their home on Kalamalka lake. A private family service will be held at a later date. Donations can be made to the North Okanagan Hospice Society.

Jean and Glen were the most gracious of hosts. My earliest memories of meeting them were when they invited our family of six to dinner and parlour games. I was the oldest child of four and maybe ten years of age the first visit. They made us feel so special and we must have behaved because we were invited back! As I grew up my parents kept in touch with them as both my Dad and Glen were in the Kiwanis Service Club. They attended my and Rick’s wedding and we exchanged Christmas cards for years.
The past ten years, Jean lived right next door to my mom Connie. What an inspiration of how to live life as actively as one can as a senior and in the service of others! When I came to town, I always knocked on her door for a quick hello if she was home. We usually got a chat in at some point of my stay.
Jean always watched out for my mom, knocking on the door to go down to dinner together if they were both in that evening . An “energizer bunny “ and clear of mind to the end of her days, I hope I can live as well. Jean will be greatly missed by the Weitzel family.
