In Loving Memory

Howard Norman Swaren

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Howard Norman Swaren of Kamloops, BC on June 3rd, 2024, at 91 years of age, surrounded by his family members. He is survived by his loving wife Leona Margaret Ann Swaren, his children Myra (Terry Fetter) Swaren of Lake Cowichan, BC, Brian (Janice) Swaren of Nanaimo, BC, and Larry (Vivien) Swaren of Lampasas, Texas. Also left to cherish his memory are numerous grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Howard was born in Gallahad, AB, to parents Nels & Olga Swaren on August 7th, 1932 – one of seven siblings. In 1942 the family left the farm for Mission, BC, where he continued school. Howard worked on tugboats on the Fraser River, then had a long career in the meat & grocery business and was a volunteer fireman in Haney.

In 1952 he met the love of his life, Leona. She picked him, as he had a car to drive her home after the dance at Sumas Hall. They dated for 2 years and got married on February 6th, 1954, and had three kids – Myra, Brian and Larry. They moved to Kamloops in the early 80’s to manage Brock Estates before retiring.

Dad was involved in the Lions Club for over 50 years and was dedicated to serving the community. He had a love for snowmobiling, skiing, fishing, curling and golf – both playing and watching. Mom and Dad enjoyed a 6-month trip across Canada and the United States. They travelled on various trips to Japan, Australia, Norway and Portugal.

A Memorial Service for Howard will be held on June 10th, 2024, at 1:00pm at the Kamloops Alliance Church.

We all love you grandpa and you will be missed by many, but I know you will always be with us. You were a great grandfather to myself and were a loving father figure for your wife and kids. We know you are now in a better place. Always in my thoughts.

  5. #1 Grand daughter Larissa says:

My earliest memories of my grandpa were spent at their home in Abbotsford where we gathered for family events. I can hear my grandpa’s voice “hey there you little rascals, come sit on my lap, the claw is going to tickle you” – smiling and laughing my brother and I would run to his arms.

Grandpa loved to keep busy by painting, gardening, cards, hiking are just some of the activities we shared. Grandpa loved life and the joy it has to offer. Everywhere he went, would make friends and would capture pictures, where every single photo, had a story behind it.

We say that he has gone to a better place-but he will never be gone. He is always with each of us that loved him.
He’ll be in all the small things and the quiet moments, and forever by my side. I am forever grateful for the time and cherished memories with my Grandpa. Love you #1
    Love your #1
