In Loving Memory
Elizabeth “Betty” Brown
With sad but thankful hearts, we announce the passing of Betty Brown, who went to heaven on August 15, 2023, at the age of 75. Elizabeth Anne Hopp, affectionally known as “Betty,” was born on May 6, 1948, in Kelowna General Hospital. Her parents, Adolf and Meta Hopp, together with her three brothers, Albert, Walter, and Eric, lived on a 10-acre orchard family farm on Gibson Road in Rutland, BC.
Betty attended Rutland Elementary School and Rutland Secondary School – Class of 1966. Betty went to a Secretarial School in Kelowna and later applied her skills and administrative talents at Imperial Oil in Edmonton and the Credit Bureau in Kelowna.
Betty met her future husband in a divine encounter at her brother Walter’s mechanic shop. Donald was very shy, but Betty took a chance and asked him out. It worked out for them and on June 17, 1972, she married the love of her life, Donald Alfred Brown.
Their love story led them through various chapters, from Williams Lake to Westbank and eventually to a 47-acre farm in Beaverdell. Betty devoted her time to raising her family and was an active member of the community. She was a Brownies and Girl Guide leader and a Sunday School teacher. She was always willing to help and was a shining example to so many people. Betty and Donald moved from Beaverdell to Kelowna in 2000 and built their dream cabin at Deka Lake in the summer of 2022.
Betty was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1973 and was told she would be in a wheelchair by the time her son graduated. She continued to walk up until the end because of her resilience and faith in God. Her health deteriorated over the last few years, but she kept in touch with family and friends by email, phone calls, and greeting cards. Betty’s greatest joy was to connect with those she loved.
Betty leaves behind her husband of 51 years, her daughter Denise Barry (Gavin Barry), her son Darren Brown (Mikiko Brown), family members, and numerous friends. In particular, Betty Griffin and Irene Moonen – her two childhood best friends.
A celebration of Elizabeth “Betty” Brown’s life will be held at Kelowna Christian Centre, 905 Badke Rd, Kelowna, BC on Saturday, September 30, 2023, service at 1:00 pm with a reception in the lobby of Kelowna Christian Centre to follow.

I am very sorry for your lose.I was in her class in Rutland.Just know that she is in our Lords loving arms
Reading the compassionately written obituary, I tho’t that there is no whitewashing of her earthly life here at all. It’s simply not needed. Some embellishment is done to assuage consciences at their sad time or otherwise now and then. It’s a vagary in our lives and culture.
If anything some muted understatement was in play.
I am privileged to have known Betty and her Husband Don over decades. They were Lovebirds, an example to many always.
Betty was in truth a very kind and studiously considerate Lady. Nary a hypocritical bone in her body. Which I found to be refreshing cause of her consistency therein. Despite her earthly troubles healthwise that would have affected lesser mortals something fierce.
I saw love in her that became a shining example to me personally over those same years. Manifesting the love of her sweet Lord and Savior that she was all about; all day long.
And o how she loved gospel hymns and songs with meaningful lyrics. Snippets of which she sent to me by email from time to time. And the two great Kids she and Don raised…
Words fail me to share more adequately praise for this genuinely Christian Friend gone Home.
