Edith Levey (nee Angove) died on April 13, 2023 at 98 years old after a long struggle with old age. She will be sorely missed by her children Bill, Mark (Gayle), Ann (Ron), Margaret (Steve), and John (Bronwen), her grandchildren Trevor, Cassie, Andy, Kim, Van, Iris and Amelia, her great-grandchildren Tyra and Hunter, her brother Bill, and her nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Don in 2010 and her granddaughter Tamar in 1995.
Edith was born May 31st, 1924 in Kimberly, BC. to say Edith was born May 31st, 1924 in Kimberley, BC. She earned a BSc in microbiology at UBC followed by a Teacher’s Certificate from Vancouver Normal School. She and Don were married in 1950 and lived in Invermere, Cortes Island, and Sicamous before settling in Armstrong.
In Armstrong, along with raising her five rowdy children, Edith was very involved with the Zion United Church (where she led the Explorer’s girls’ group), the Minervas, and the North Okanagan Naturalist Club. She loved hiking, skiing, nature, birding, and reading.
She was passionate about social justice and was involved in Amnesty International and other organizations. In 1985 at the age of 61, she went to Nicaragua with Witness for Justice and Peace to be a non-violent observer, which sparked an enduring interest in learning Spanish. She and Don spent many winters in Cuernavaca, Mexico attending Spanish language classes and making friends.
Above all, Edith loved people. She was interested in everyone she ever met and people basked in her warmth and her interest in them.
A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, May 9th at 2:00 PM at Zion United Church in Armstrong (2315 Pleasant Valley Blvd) with tea to follow in the Church Hall. The family requests no flowers. Donations may be made in Edith’s name to Indspire https://indspire.ca.
