Edith Dunn

Edith passed peacefully at Pleasant Valley Manor in Armstrong, BC, on September 25, 2026, at the age of 95.  She is now reunited with her dearly missed late husband, Jack (2006).  She leaves behind her daughter, Darlene of Enderby, sons John (Joan) of Nanaimo and Andrew (Shannon) of Kelowna, whom were fortunate enough to have been able to visit her during her last days.

Edie had eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren who all carry loving memories of lively card games and enjoying delicious baking with Grammie.  Her remaining brothers, Jim (Marjorie), Fred (Sylvia), Albert and her sister-in-law, Sandra, live in Kentville and Halls Harbour, Nova Scotia. She also continued to have lovely relationships with many of her and Jack’s numerous nieces and nephews from the Maritimes.

Edie was predeceased by her son, Rob (November 2023), her parents (James and Ruby Houghton), brothers David, Bobby, and Harold, and her sister, Janet.

Edie was born in 1931 at Vernon Mines, Nova Scotia and grew up mostly in the quaint little fishing village of Halls Harbour.  She met Jack at the age of 17 and was immediately “smitten”! They married in December 1950 and soon moved to Ontario. Over the following years, they lived in Trois Rivieres, Quebec, Port Alberni, BC, and finally made their home in Castlegar BC in 1965.

Edie was a devoted mother and an exceptional “homemaker” focussing on raising her four children. Many family adventures included camping and fishing trips throughout BC as well as regular trips back to the Maritimes.

While being known as a great cook and baker (How we loved her spaghetti and doughnuts!), Edie was a very active community member.  She volunteered over the years at the Castlegar Hospital Auxiliary Treasure Shop, Castlegar Hospice Society, United Church and Castlegar Legion.  In 1999, she was honoured to be named Castlegar’s Citizen of the Year.  She made and gifted numerous quilts to her family.

Edie was known as a proficient bridge player and was always game to play cards with someone. She and Jack enjoyed their times on the golf course almost as much as they enjoyed weekend garage sales.  No outing was ever complete without making a stop for a sale!

Edie continued to travel in her later years, enjoying some cruises and occasional trips back to the Maritimes.  In 2020, she made the difficult decision to leave Castlegar and move to Vernon, where Darlene was living and Andrew was working.  She was able to enjoy an active life and make some new friends despite it being during Covid times.

She lived her last months at Pleasant Valley Manor in Armstrong where she and her family were comforted by the excellent care she received.  While Edie will be deeply missed, we are grateful for all that she gave us. Her family is also thankful for the love and support that they have been receiving.

Edie’s remains will be placed with Jack’s at Park Memorial Cemetery in Castlegar at a later date.
