In Loving Memory
Margaret “Maggie” Morrice

Our mother took her final breath of this lifetime on May 24, 4 months short of her 100th birthday. She slipped away as she lived, quietly, privately and with no fuss.
Mom was born on the farm in Wynyard, Saskatchewan, on September 22, 1926. She, like so many other prairie folk, kicked the farm dust off her shoes and, after a short time in Ontario, moved to BC. She adored the lakes and the mountains, both in short supply on the prairies, and never tired of the tranquility of nature. She would sit on the deck of her wee house in the BX, look around at the mountains with a smile, and say “now THIS is my church.” Our family cabin on Shuswap Lake, her other “sanctuary,” gave her over 50 years of peace and laughter as well. I’m sure she is sitting around the scrabble table now, with our Dad and dear friends Norm and Jackie Cannon, laughing and bemoaning the crummy chits they picked up.
Her very long life thrust many challenges her way, but through all the difficult times she never lost her spirit, her strength, and her sense of humour. She always looked for, and found, the gifts in any tough situation, and was filled with joy, gratitude and contentment through the many seasons of her time here.
Mom was spunky, fun, strong, grounded, loving, curious, loyal, determined (we called it stubborn), and solid as a rock. Famous for her love of scrabble and crib, her relentless sweet tooth, and her addiction to trashy romance novels (much to the chagrin of the grandchildren who once happened upon a particularly spicy section), she lived her life simply, honestly and in devotion to her family.
Mom leaves behind the three of us, Ceyrah, David and Scott, along with our partners Darryl, Jean and Nicole, and Mary, our sister raised by another mother. She also leaves her cherished grandchildren, Brynne, Eilidh, Amy, Riley and Brendan, and her great-grandsons Sage and Brooks, who didn’t know her for long but will hear all the stories! She’s also remembered by her brother-in-law, Ian Morrice, her daughter-out-law, Lynda, and her dear friend Gail Altwasser, who shared Mom’s lifelong passion for curling. They spent countless hours burning up the phone lines, dissecting each and every rock thrown, celebrating and/or cursing the results of those games.
So many family and friends preceded Mom to the afterlife. Our Dad, who passed away in 1966 after only 10 years of a wonderful marriage, all of our grandparents, and all of Mom’s brothers and sisters. Mom was one of a kind – the heartbeat and the soul of our family, our sanctuary during tough times, and our loudest cheerleader when we succeeded.
We’ll miss her forever. Fly free, Momma.
