Robert (Bob) Garth Barkman

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Robert (Bob) Garth Barkman on September 5, 2026 at Vernon Jubilee Hospital in Vernon B.C. at the age of 72 years.

Bob was born November 28, 1953 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He came into the Dave Barkman family as a baby in Steinbach, Manitoba. As a child Bob would ride around on his bike with friends, play cops and robbers, and cowboys and Indians. In those days he would also accompany his dad, at times, to his construction jobs, the second-hand store or his furniture store.

In 1966 the family moved to Abbotsford, BC and discovered a whole treasure trove of relatives. Bob’s life was filled with unique chapters and journeys. He was married for a time, years ago. Bob had several jobs, working at Brookside farms, working at Pacific Pallet, and his last place of employment at Buy Low Foods working in the warehouse. 

Bob appreciated keeping in touch with family and friends, enjoying a chat, reminiscing or just catching up and swapping stories. He also relished spending time with his buddies and going out for coffee to Starbucks. Bob went on numerous trips with friends and appreciated nice cars, especially his blue Corvette and brown Nova. He also enjoyed driving around and seeing what was new in the area. Bob was sentimental and held on to items and memories that gave him comfort. He was content with his routines and liked things to be timed just so, not late and not without notice. He appreciated kindness and customer service and valued when someone went above and beyond for him. He especially treasured phone calls from close friends and relatives, celebrating the deep bonds of fruendschaft. Above all, he loved his family and those close to him. 

Bob’s health started deteriorating a number of years ago and he made the move to Heaton Place in Armstrong. Though Bob’s health declined rapidly over the last six months, it was a comfort to him that he was able to spend his time at home in between his hospital stays. He was extremely grateful for the caring staff there and the help they and others provided.

Left to cherish the fond and precious memories of Bob are his loving siblings, brother Burt Barkman of Winnipeg, Manitoba, sister Brenda (Ken) Regehr of Armstrong, BC, brother-in-law Dave Cherniwchan of Abbotsford, BC, and sister Karen Ruchty of Abbotsford, BC. He will also be deeply missed by his nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, extended family and a community of deeply cherished friends. Bob was predeceased by his parents Dave and Dorothy Barkman, his sister-in-law Yvonne Barkman, his sister Phyllis Cherniwchan and his great nephew Bryce Worden.

Bob was a caring brother, uncle, cousin and friend.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Cypress Funeral Home, located at 2980 Smith Drive in Armstrong, B.C. A luncheon will follow after the service.

We are deeply grateful to all the relatives who stepped in, as well as the staff at Heaton Place, community healthcare workers, ambulance attendants, nurses, and doctors. Your kindness, dedication, and support brought us great comfort during a difficult time.
