Dexter (Munekazu) Murakami

With profound sadness and deep love, we announce the passing of Dexter (Munekazu) Murakami—a devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend—who passed away peacefully on September 22, 2025, at Grand River Hospital, Kitchener, Ontario.

Born on September 1, 1934, Dexter spent most of his life in British Columbia, particularly in the Okanagan and Shuswap regions. His life was defined by service, craftsmanship, and a deep appreciation for the outdoors. He proudly served in the Air Force branch of the Canadian Armed Forces, where he developed the discipline and precision that guided him throughout his life. After his military service, Dexter built a respected career as a master mechanic, known for his skill, honesty, and dedication.

Dexter’s passions extended far beyond his profession. He was an avid fly fisherman, boater, golfer, and curler, and found great joy in sharing his knowledge as a Power Squadron instructor and curling coach. His hands were rarely idle—he was a talented leather tooler and a meticulous custom pen craftsman. Among his proudest achievements was becoming a master golf-club craftsman with the Golf Masters of America.

He was a proud member and past president of the Salmon Arm Elks Lodge, and also belonged to the Royal Canadian Legion and the Armstrong Fish & Game Club. He cherished the camaraderie and community these organizations offered. Dexter’s happiest moments were spent camping and fishing, surrounded by nature, friends, and family—creating memories that will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.

Dexter is survived by his children Nina (Robert) Kavalinas and Tamara Murakami; granddaughters Christina (Nicholas) Kavalinas (Krajewski) and Isabella Murakami Fordham; great-granddaughter Riley Krajewski; sisters Joyce Eto, Cheri Eto, and Rosina Eto; brother Donald (June) Eto; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members. He will be remembered for his warmth, wisdom, and the quiet strength he brought to every aspect of his life.

A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at 11:00 am at the Cypress Funeral Home in Armstrong, BC.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation, in honour of Dexter’s generous spirit and love for life.

He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever loved.
