Cheryl Lee Hedges

After a lengthy and bravely fought battle with cancer and heart failure, Cheryl passed away peacefully at the age of 78 at North Okanagan Hospice House on August 19, 2026.

Born in Imperial Saskatchewan, Dec. 4th 1947 to Florence and Robert Nelson, Cheryl was the eldest of her siblings, Karen, Jeff and Michael. She was close with all her siblings and a great big sister, she supported her sister Karen through her battle with cancer and passing in 2003. Most recently she was very involved in the direction of care for her brother Michael who had Down syndrome, he passed away exactly one month prior to her.

She resided in Armstrong and the community became her home for over 50 years, her career was spent working at the local Credit Union. As a single parent raising two teenagers, it was not easy, but she did an amazing job always putting them first. She made great friendships over the years and she cherished the memories of her Sisterhood group. In retirement she spent many summers at her holiday spot in Glen Echo Resort on the Shuswap, her focus being the best Grammy to her five grandchildren. She had a sign that read “if I’d known how great grandchildren would be, I’d have had them first”, she loved them very deeply. In recent years she enjoyed volunteering at the Abbeyfield House in Armstrong, even through her own health struggles.

Cheryl was a quiet and kind woman who overcame a lot of challenges in life, she did so with grace, determination, laughter and a sassy sense of humour. She loved to do things for others and had many talents and hobbies; gardening, baking, crocheting, completing a daily crossword puzzle, and most recently she’d made a beautiful hand knitted throw. One of her passions was genealogy and learning about her family history, that led to making connections around the world. Back in the day she earned many prize ribbons in the local IPE for her brown bread and other baked goods. Cheryl was an avid Blue Jays fan and rarely missed a game, she enjoyed watching with family in our final time spent together.

Survived by daughter Dana Hedges, son Nathan Hedges, grandchildren Brennan, Alex and Kaden Picklyk, Chloe and Sophie Hedges, and daughter in law Melissa Dalgleish. Cheryl’s brother Jeff Nelson (Pat) were lovingly by her side through everything, as well as her devoted best friend Rhonda Keating. Predeceased by her partner Danny Macvicar in 2007.

Thank you to Dr. Kira Mclellan, whom mom fondly called by first name, she was the guiding light for all of us and we are so grateful for the care she and her team provided. Her final weeks at the North Okanagan Hospice House were spent being cared for with dignity and compassion, each of you made the end of her journey a little bit brighter for her and our family, thank you.

To end a phone call with Cheryl she would say-“bye for now”. Bye for now Cheryl, you will be so missed as we hold onto our memories.

A celebration of life will be held for family and friends at a future date.
