In Loving Memory

George Russell Betts

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of George Russell Betts, who went peacefully to be with the Lord on March 9, 2026, in Kamloops, British Columbia, at the age of 92, surrounded by the love of his family.

George was born on February 13, 1934, in Matapedia, Quebec, to Ulmer and Effie Betts. One of seven children, he grew up surrounded by family and the values of hard work, faith, and kindness that would guide him throughout his life. He later moved west, where he raised his young family on the Sunshine Coast before settling in Kamloops in 1972, a community he proudly called home for the rest of his life.

George was known for his kind heart, generous spirit, deep faith, and wonderful sense of humour. He had a special way of making people feel welcome and valued, and he was always ready with a warm smile, a helping hand, or a joke to brighten someone’s day.

For many years, George worked as a millwright with Weyerhaeuser, where he was respected for his skill, dedication, and strong work ethic. Outside of work, he found joy in life’s simple pleasures—spending time with family, tending to his garden, lawn bowling with the church seniors’ group, golfing, serving his church and community, and visiting longtime friends.

George shared 59 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Frances Betts. Together they built a loving home and family. Frances passed away in 2015. In 2016, George married Gladys Johnson, and he was grateful for the companionship, friendship, and family they shared in his later years.

George will be lovingly remembered by his children: Roberta (Dennis) Milton, Sheila Stephenson, Serina McIntosh, Shelley (Wayne) Macdonald, Daniel Betts, and Grace (Darren) Jones; and by his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought him great joy and pride. He is also survived by his wife, Gladys Johnson; her children, Charlotte (Earl) Makortoff and Edward (Jill) Johnson; and their families.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Frances Betts; his grandson, Robert Stephenson; and his great-granddaughter, Madeline Stephenson.

George will be remembered for his unwavering faith, his kindness toward others, and the laughter he shared so freely. His greatest joy was his family, and he took great pride in watching it grow through the generations. His life was a quiet example of love, faith, and generosity, and his memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Salvation Army, 344 Poplar Street, Kamloops, BC, on May 16, 2026, at 11:00 AM.

In lieu of flowers, donations in George’s memory may be made to the Salvation Army.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Major Orest and Laurie Goyak of the Salvation Army, and to Pastor Harry and Lori Bicknell of Summit Drive Baptist Church, as well as the staff at Royal Inland Hospital and many friends, for their compassion, kindness, and support during this time.

His faith, laughter, and love will remain with us always. 🙏
