While later living in Vancouver, BC he met his wife Carol Gorin and they were married in 1969. Originally, a mining job brought them to the Slocan Valley where the town of Slocan became their home. David worked as a lumber grader at the local sawmill, Slocan Forest Products while raising their two children. David was a lifelong rockhound always known for having a passion for rocks and minerals. He later completed his education becoming a geologist and gemologist. He served his community as Mayor of Slocan, Assistant Fire Chief of the Slocan Fire Department, a member and coordinator of the Provincial Emergency Program in the Slocan area, and Elder at the Slocan Presbyterian Church.
In 1994 he was divorced, and a few years later he met Maureen Wade who was his companion until her passing in 2014.
